PBS Kids

The biggest draw at PBS Kids, especially if your child is a fan of the station, is of course all the links to PBS’s many wonderful children’s shows. Like, Clifford, Arthur, and Dragon Tales. And each show has it’s own activities for kids to do. The site also has sing-a-longs, games, and colouring. There’s also a Bookfinder, so that parents and kids can find just the right book for their interests and age.

Volcanoes

Picture it…

“Deep inside Earth, between the molten iron core and the thin crust at the surface, there is the mantle, a large layer of rock that is largely solid, but flows like plastic. When, for various reasons, rock from the mantle melts, it sometimes moves to the Earth’s surface through weak spots in the crust, releasing heat, gasses, and rock–a volcanic eruption.”

Volcanoes is a site that helps children learn about one of the most fascinating natural occurrences on this earth. The site teaches about predicting eruptions and coping with the risk that living near volcanoes presents. The site also has terrific video clips of volcanoes.

McGruff

How old is McGruff any way? He certainly has been around for a while, but I guess the old ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ saying applies here. McGruff teaches children about law enforcement and safety. The site has games and stories to help them learn about important issues that can affect them. For example, McGruff has a section about bullying; how to cope with it and how to stop it. It’s a site that kids and parents should visit together to deal with sometimes tough, but necessary issues. McGruff can make this easier and maybe even fun for everyone.

Cyberkids

Cyberkids kids is a site for kids, and to a large extent, by kids. The site’s mission statement

“is to provide a voice for young people on the Internet. We accomplish this by publishing original creative work by kids ages 7 to 12.”

The site is packed full of impressive poems, stories, and absolutely gorgeous works of art from kids. The site has a section for parents, where you can submit your child’s work. Kids can also apply to be a product reviewer for the site, reviewing things like kid friendly software. Cyberkids also has games, brain teasers, and links to sites where kids can find online tutoring, help with homework, and scholarships.

Pauly’s Playhouse

What a fun site! there are lots of things here to keep young kids entertained. Check out cartoons staring Mog and Krog, (sort of furry cave men type figures) or play fun games like Franken Faces, sort of a cyber Mr. Potato Head, or check out Pauly’s Piano where kids can bring songs like “Three Blind Mice” to life by following the colour coded instructions. This site has everything; there is even an online store if you like Pauly’s products so that kids can have games, cds, or clothing at home.

“Pauly’s Playhouse has been online for 7+ years providing fun, free and safe entertainment to children all over the world!”
